Special French 75 Valentine’s Recipe

By now (if you know me at all) it should be no surprise that I love the stunning look and sophisticated taste of a French 75.

It’s the perfect drink for any occasion- an ideal mix of fancy pants with a little punch to the face (the good kind of punch)! lol

If you’ve never heard of a French 75 (whaaat??) let me share some history (care of wiki).

The French 75 is a cocktail traditionally made from gin, champagne, lemon juice, and sugar. (it’s also called a 75 Cocktail, or in French simply a Soixante Quinze.

The drink dates back to WWI, but an early form was said to be created in 1915 at the New York Bar in Paris (later Harry’s New York Bar) by a barman named Harry MacElhone.

This combo of ingredients was said to have such a kick that it felt like being shelled with the powerful French 75mm field gun (hence the name).

Can’t you just picture this drink in a champagne glass in your hand, in a crowded bar, all dressed up for a fancy party, (I’d even order one in a dingy crowded pub playing pool)!

So when I recently stumbled upon this cute video on Instagram by bromabakery (here) I thought it would make the cutest valentines treats and I just had to try it out.

The recipe is exactly like a regular French 75, with the brilliant addition of 4 packets of gelatin….. Do you know where this is headed yet?

Let’s get to the recipe first.

Recipe:

♥ 3 cups prosecco (I know it’s not champagne, but it’s what I usually buy, it’s less expensive and IMHO it’s just as tasty!)

♥ 1/2 cup fine white sugar & the juice of 1 lemon (approx 2-3 tbsp)

♥ combine the above ingredients together in a saucepan stirring over med-low heat until the sugar dissolves (don’t let it boil)

♥ whisk in 1 box of gelatin (4 packets)

♥ add 1 cup of Gin (I love Empress Gin for its unique taste and its gorgeous purple colour (which magically turns a stunning pink when lemon juice is added)

♥ pour into cute little disposable champagne cups, a pre-lined cake pan, cute silicone moulds or anything else fun

♥ chill in the fridge until it sets (approx 3 hours or overnight)

 


delicious and fun jello shots!

These babies are so yummy and fun to eat (and they certainly pack their signature punch). I don’t recall ever having jello shots, so it was a blast playing around with them.

While taking some photos, I also discovered they are really cute as mock ice cubes in a glass full of champagne prosecco (I tried them in a glass of OJ, which was also a fun surprise, the pics just didn’t make the cut). I think they’re just perfect straight out of the mould or swimming in a tall glass of bubbly.

I hope you give these treats a try! They don’t take long to set and are the perfect little treat for a Valentine’s day walk along the beach, picnic in the park or just snuggling on the couch watching a flick.
